  • Since we love the way in which the sun bathes the space in a warm, surreal glow, we rather not have something that's a party popper. Ensure the drapes are lightweight.
  • If its silk, and not cotton that appeals to you, make sure you line it with cotton fabric to prevent its eye-candy appeal from fading.
  • Attention to detail is key when the fabric is being sewed. Let your sense of style guide you while creating awe-inspiring patterns. Consider the length of the drapes earnestly.
  • The color and designs must be completely in sync with the theme of your space. So while a sensational dark colored, heavily embellished curtain will burnish the aura of a contemporary space; a beige colored drape with an ornate diamond design and beautiful borders will be a sight to behold in a traditional bathroom.

Cutting Edge Real Estate - Is There Anything New? Part 1

The world of real estate has pretty much stayed the same for decades. Its no different today than it was 50 years ago. The basic principles will never change. Is this true? Only part of it? Well, lets look at what is different in the real estate world. Also, lets see what is the same.

Because of the unbelievable appreciation of land in recent years the real estate industry has grabbed the attention of Americans and also the world ( investment opportunities are worldwide)
like it hasnt done for a long time. There were certainly periods in the USAs history where people
were absolutely overtaken with the idea of making money from and possessing real estate.

Take

the decades in the 1800s as an example when people risked their lives to go west. The risks were amazing but the idea of a better life and of having their own land made it worthwhile. This is certainly a situation that could be described as being one that hasnt changed much because people are still looking at real estate investments, land development, land deals, building homes,
acquiring land, and just looking for a better life. That will never change I believe even if some day, hundreds of years from now it means buying land on space cities and maybe even the moon. Heck, I dont think the idea of buying condos in space is really that far away actually. It will happen. ( Ok! This example can be described as a BIG difference.)

Then again citing the 1800s people can also say things are dramatically different now than they were 175 years ago. The price for one. Remember the Louisiana Purchase? I think the US
bought about the states for the price of a pickup truck now days. Or in a more recent example,
how about our purchase of Alaska from Russia? Another good speculative real estate deal for the
US. Sorry to all the Russian and French readers out there. One thing the US has always seemed to be pretty good at is acquiring land at a good price. We havent done that in a while though and I wont get into the reasons why not, as that would make this article an e-book for sure. Oh yes, the Manhattan deal was a good one for the USA also. We wont go into the political discussions of what happened to the Native Americans here either.

So what is really new now? How about creative financing? This has been a big change in the last twenty years or so. Its all about getting more people able to buy homes. This helps the whole real estate industry as a whole. Not just the lower income levels who are able to buy the more expensive homes now days, but also the rich people as a kind of reverse trickle down theory.

I will name this my trickle up theory. The original trickle down theory, which I was never a big believer in by the way, was about cutting taxes for the rich and making things easier for them in a business sense and then the money will trickle down to the middle and lower classes because the rich will be spending more money, thus creating more jobs and more wealth for the lower classes.

This doesnt really work as well as some think in my opinion because the wealthy many times just
keep their money in investments which dont trickle down as much. They trickle down but a portfolio of millions or billions doesnt really create as many jobs as would be created if all that money was in the hands of middle class workers where it would be put right back into the economy. But when lower income people can buy homes it certainly helps upper class investors
because this creates more demand and with less supply the prices go up for everyone.

Something else that is new and getting more and more common is interest only mortgages.

This also allows more people to get into the home buying market. Some believe the interest
only mortgages will be a bad thing that will help burst the current so called housing bubble or real estate bubble. That is yet to be seen, but what is clear is that these creative financing solutions are
helping thousands buy their homes. The interest only loans are also helping the real estate investors quite a bit, especially those who are looking to buy, repair and sell. Or those who are looking to buy a piece of land, build on it and flip it ( sell it ). These people like the no interest
loans because they dont really care about paying down the principal.

The wrap around mortgage is a mortgage that isnt new. It has been around for a while but after losing popularity in the 70s it may be making a come back. Check out this link that describes it in more detail and has an e-book that goes into greater detail about the wraparound mortgage;
The Secrets of the Little Known Wraparound Mortgages.
http://www.automateyourwebsite.com/app/?af=268818&u=http://www.cashflowinstitute.com/wrap.htm

Heres another very popular newer type of loan, the non-income verification loans, also known as NIV loans and stated income loans. This has also been a part of the creative financing process of finding ways to get more people into loans. Actually it just shows that banks and mortgage companies have lowered the qualifications and standards to buy a home. That is a good thing as far as I am concerned. The rich may be getting richer but at least the poor have a better chance of owning a home. The middle class also. Statistics show that the home owners percentage is at an all time high in most areas. This has a lot to do with these ideas such as the stated income or
niv loans. Here is an article about the NIV loan;
http://www.cutting-edge-real-estate.com/nivloans.htm

The real estate industry is the best industry in the world I believe but first make sure you look at as much information as you can find before investing. Well, to a certain extent anyways. Dont wait too long. At some point you need to take action whether it is buying your first home, second home, investment home or a development. Dont be one of those who says I wish I had bought a house way back when.

Designing For Kids -The CastleFort Story

"It should be about this big..."

My six-year-old son's voice trailed away as he paced off an area in our back yard about the size of a blimp hangar.

"...and about that tall..."

He pointed to the top of the tallest tree in the neighborhood, but had the Sears Tower been on Bellaire Avenue he would have chosen it instead.

"...And it should be red..."

My two-year old interrupted: "and yellow..."

"...with a windmill on top, and a rope ladder, and a slide, and a swing, and...can you build it today?"

"Well," I said, and started to explain that before we could even start to build his new tree house, plans had to be drawn; cost estimates had to be calculated, and we hadn't even picked out a site yet. It was a pretty big tree house so we might need a structural engineer. Could I build it myself or would I need to get competitive bids from contractors? I was just getting to the part about applying for a building permit when he broke in:

"Dad," he said, "you can do it, you're an arky-tek."

(Slight pause as I choked down the lump of pride rising in my throat - how could I say no to that?)

"Okay. Hand me my credit card, son, we're off to the lumberyard."

Like a lot of architectural projects, this one started off with a clash of dreams and reality. As the "director" of a project, I'm often challenged to sort out the possible from the impossible and simultaneously create something beautiful, useful, and lasting. And if my client is open to alternatives and willing to explore options to control the cost, then we've got a realistic chance of bringing the project in near the budget.

But the budget for the "castlefort", as my kids had now come to calling it, was only $300. And even that began to look like a distant dream when we got to the lumberyard. Yikes! For a minute, I thought the prices were in Yen.

I just needed utility-grade lumber, not the straightest, smoothest boards on earth; not perfect knot-free specimens lovingly hand-carved from trees that had lived long and happy lives and in the end, had fallen softly into thick beds of pine straw - just plain old 2 x 4's.

Eventually, I culled out the worst looking boards from the bunch and talked the store manager into a sizeable discount. We were back on budget.

I'd known early on that the biggest problem we faced in the siting and design of our tree house was the lack of trees, or at least trees that could support a tree house. But there is always another solution lurking in the background, hidden behind the pile of baggage in my brain that keeps trying to tell me what a tree house should look like. The solution was really quite simple when I realized that it wasn't so much that the tree house had to be up in a tree, it just mostly had to be up. And so we built it on stilts in a simplified version of coastal construction where pilings are sunk into the sand to hold up the floor deck. With my six-year old supervising, I set four 4 x 4's into postholes and filled them with concrete.

The rest of the project had many of the elements of a "real" house; framing, siding, roofing, painting, even indoor/outdoor carpeting. I balked at my son's request for electricity and cable TV but gave in on the chimney/skylight.

Painting was collaboration between my kids, my wife, and me; the adults handling the outside while the kids tackled the interior dcor. To the relief of our neighbors, the exterior complements the house. The inside, however, looks like an oven after a particularly bad lasagna explosion. But the kids love it, and so do I.

Right from the beginning the castlefort was a huge hit with the neighbors and their kids. At every party it's the first place the kids go and it is the center of activity for almost every game they can think up. But then a funny thing happened - the neighbor kids started asking their dads when they'd start building their castleforts. For at least one dad, the pressure was too much; his tree house is on schedule for a late spring completion.

One evening my wife and I were sitting on the deck watching the kids play tag around the castlefort. "Honey", I said, "I wonder how old the boys will be when they get tired of playing in the castlefort?"

"I don't know if they ever will," she said. "Right now it's a big toy but eventually it'll be a secret hideout, or a cabin for summer sleepovers with their friends," "Why maybe they'll even invite their girlfriends over to see it someday."

"Girlfriends?" I said. "Girlfriends?" We looked at each other for a moment and suddenly the realization of what she'd just said hit her.

"Ten years, babe," I said. "Then it's coming down!"

Bathroom Design Ideas For Small Renovations

When you have a few good bathroom design ideas ready to go, you may find yourself running into some small projects along the way. With small bathroom renovations, you can find yourself with major headaches quickly when there are small problems that end up being larger problems including those with plumbing and electrical problems. The size of the bathroom itself is not necessary going to help you to stay within a budget, unless you plan ahead.

When Size Hurts

One of the many troubles people have with bathroom design ideas is handling problems around the small size. You may find that there is not enough space in the area and this will cause delays as well as problems getting started. More so, you will be limited to where things can be moved. Even the door may be too small to get large bathtubs into it. In some construction jobs, the final walls were not put in until all of the fixtures and tubs were in place, which means that your home could have been built around that tub!

Another problem with the small space is the floor covering and wall covering. While you will need less, you may find that the tight space limits the area where you can put it in, and makes the cutting and fitting job more difficult than it should be. You may need additional space in another section of the home to get the cutting done.

Floor Plan Changes

In some small bathroom designs, it may become impossible to change the layout of the bathroom. It may be that there is only one wall that is large enough to accommodate the bathtub in that area. If you try to move it to another area, you may not have enough room for something else. When considering your bathroom design ideas, keep in mind that you do need to consider how the layout can be changed successfully.

In most cases, small changes in the layout and bathroom design can happen in a small bathroom renovation. In other situations, they may need to stay, which may limit what you can do to updating fixtures and improving the overall appearance of the room. Still, it may not fit your overall goal. To make the room seem larger, brighten up the colors you select from the walls and the flooring. This gives it the appearance of looking larger and will improve the overall look.

How to Shop For Shower Cubicles

The overall shape of your bathroom and its design has to be kept in mind while shopping for a shower cubicle. There are two types of shower cubicles-the open cubicle and the closed one. Open shower cabins partially cover the shower zone and there will be a shower part or a door between the existing walls of the bathroom. Closed shower cabins are completely enclosed on all sides including the top with a roof which prevents outflow of steam and slows down condensation. Even though the cabin is more expensive, it is much more comfortable and greatly enhances the visual appeal.

The body panels of shower cubicles are made from diverse materials such as pig-iron, steel, ceramics, artificial marble and also of synthetic materials like acrylic and quaryl. Quaryl is the latest derivative of acrylic. All these materials have their own characteristics and advantages. Pig-iron panels are steady and rigid, but the disadvantage is that they get hot if used for too long. Panels made of steel sometimes vibrate when a forceful jet of water his it. Ceramic made panels can easily crack up, if used carelessly. Acrylic panels are beautiful to look at and easier to clean but are not durable. Quaryl is more or less same as acrylic, but its surface does not allow dirt to accumulate. Marble is the best and the most convenient material, being durable, convenient, perfect and diverse looks due to the availability to marble of different hues, structures and shades around us. The only disadvantage of marble is that is the most expensive of all the options available.

The doors of shower cabins are generally made of glass. This glass can come in different types and forms- transparent, matte or rough.

High end shower cubicles are not only used for taking a shower, but also for massages, sauna and as therapeutic salons. The number of water jets can also vary in different cubicles.

Learn How to Tile a Shower

It's time to add value and quality to your home! Improvements in the bathroom can make or break a sale, don't miss out. Always check in the local designer magazines for ideas on the latest fashion. Might well be worth asking the local estate agents about the value of bathrooms and what designs are hot at the moment. Always stick you your budget, never buy way to many resources you won't ever use.

Follow each step carefully.

Step 1 Gut the shower.

Remove all unnecessary items from the shower.

Step 2 Install a vapor barrier.

This will prevent mold and mildew.

Step 3 Put up the cement board backer.

Remember to leave 1/8 inch between panels, you will seal this with silicone caulk.

Step 4 Measure.

Always use a leveling tool and sharpie when marking up.

Step 5 Dampen the cement board

Use a soft sponge.

Step 6 Trowel on the thin-set

Install a tile, remember to twist slightly when placing it onto the thin-set.

Step 7 Repeat the procedure

Repeat for each row, starting from the bottom.

Step 8 Leave to set

Leave for up to 48 hours.

Step 9 Grout the tiles

After 30 minutes wipe off the excess grout.

Step 10 Leave to set

Finally, leave to set for another 48 hours.

Plenty of money can be saved by finishing home improvements yourself, instead of calling the professionals in. Costly mistakes can be prevented by taking evening classes or purchasing books or digital video guides, recommended if your a beginner. The amount of cash used on tile replacement could definitely be better spent.

Bathrooms Going Green

With more and more people being concerned about our environmental impact, we find our selves asking - "How can I 'Go Green'?" One easy, high impact way to begin is in the bathroom of your very own home. Why the bathroom? We use a lot of water and power in the bathroom, as well as hygiene and chemical cleaning products. By making a few changes and following a few simple tips, you can go green without getting stressed out.

A great deal of your homes water consumption takes place in the bathroom. You can dramatically reduce your household water use by taking a few simple steps. There are many earth friendly bathroom suites and accessories available to help you use less water, power, and employ more recycled and earth friendly items in your home.

A new shower head can go a long ways tired making your bathroom green without costing you a bundle. These new shower heads put much less water down the drain. If you're concerned that you'll feel like you're soaping up under a trickle, look for those shower heads that aerate the water, making less water feel like more while maintaining a good water pressure.

You can find the same qualities in your bathroom basin faucets. A lower flow, aerated water tap will use significantly less water without making you feel as if you are getting significantly less out of your tap. Remembering to turn the faucet off while brushing your teeth, or any time you are not actually using the water will also save on this valuable natural resource.

Organic cotton linens are becoming more readily available, as are the easily renewable and sustainable linens made from bamboo and hemp. Don't think that by buying an organic or renewable resource product you'll be skimping on luxury. Many of the organic, bamboo and hemp towels and washcloths are of the highest quality. You can also find shower curtains and bathroom rugs made of these same fibers and fabrics, in many colors and styles.

We all need our bathrooms to be clean, but how do you achieve that without using hard chemicals that end up going down your drainpipes? There are a lot of 'green cleaners' available on the market. Look for those that are biodegradable, contain natural ingredients and come in containers made from recycled materials. You can also simply make your own. White vinegar, soda crystals and borax will eliminate bathroom dirt, mildew and lime scale without putting harmful chemicals in your home or your waste water. These old fashioned cleaning methods not only work well, but cost much less than what you can buy at the store.

Having a green bathroom in no way means sacrificing comfort and style. With more options available all the time, going green has never been easier or more fashionable.

How to Keep Remodeling Projects From Getting Out of Control

Two demons wait for unsuspecting homeowners, hoping for their chance to gobble up time and money on new home and remodeling projects.

The Ripple Effect lurks quietly in the background. Just like the movements on the pond surface for which it's named, The Ripple Effect starts out small and grows, expanding until it engulfs the entire project.

Pebble In The Pond

The Ripple Effect is the remodeling budget's worst enemy and can wreak havoc on small and large projects alike. A simple example is a window replacement project. At first glance, it's a simple, isolated project. But the interior and exterior trim must be replaced and painted and the exterior siding may have to be reworked, especially if the new window isn't the same size as the old one.

And that's just the beginning. Once that window is replaced and the new window trim painted, the rest of the trim in the room looks bad and so the homeowner decides to paint that, too. A pebble's been dropped in the pond, and the ripples have begun to spread.

What started out as a simple window replacement ends up as the refinishing of an entire room.

In new home projects, the ripple effect is more pronounced in open plan designs. With fewer walls to separate spaces, it's difficult to make flooring transitions from one room to another so more expensive floorings often cover more of the house. The lack of interior walls also requires a more expensive structural system and makes the placement of ductwork and plumbing more difficult.

Don't Make Waves

But the ripple effect can be controlled if you take a moment to consider the impact one project can have on other parts of the house. The root of the problem in the window replacement example is that a new standard sized window won't exactly fit the existing opening - necessitating the replacement of the trim.

But a custom sized window, carefully installed, might allow you to reinstall the existing trim inside and outside, and avoid the ripple effect entirely. Sure you'll spend more on the window but you'll save everywhere else, and avoid the ripple effect.

And in a new home project careful planning of the room layouts and space adjacencies allows flooring and other finishes to "break" where you want them to.

Project Creep

Project Creep is a close cousin to the Ripple Effect. Project Creep happens when the extent of the work begins to grow, creeping along at first, until no one seems able to control the spiraling costs.

Older homes, for example, often require building code upgrades when they're remodeled - upgrades that may have little to do with the project itself. When structural loads are changed in any way, for example, the existing structure must be rebuilt or retrofitted to meet updated code requirements. And moving structure usually means reworking the wiring, ductwork, and plumbing that's been routed through the area.

Project Creep can attack new home projects, too. Sometimes the causes are almost impossible to predict, such as when the excavation of the site uncovers poor soil conditions. Sometimes the cause is an outside force - an architectural review board, for example. But mostly, project creep is a result of a difference in expectations between homeowner, builder, and architect.

Plan To Avoid Creep

On any project, start with a clear idea of the level of finish and quality you expect. Don't assume that the architect and builder are in tune with your ideas about finishes - discuss your expectations in detail and whenever possible, see the actual finishes and fixtures. If you're not the detail-oriented type, hire a professional interior designer.

Poor quality drawings cause additional unplanned work during construction, and always end up costing homeowners money and time. My firm's been hired many times to correct drawings done elsewhere that contained glaring errors, omitted necessary structural steel, or just plain didn't work. Sloppy drawings are an open invitation to Project Creep.

On a remodeling or room addition project, evaluate the feasibility of the project in terms of the impact it will have on parts of the home that you're not intending to remodel. Often, room additions can easily be designed to minimize the effect on the existing structure.

Finally, always have realistic expectations about your project budget and communicate that budget to your architect and builder. When everyone understands the project's financial goals the chances for success are greatly increased.

Plaster Wall Moisture Problem

Styling Up Your Outdoor Patio is Tiring Yet EXCITING!

Outdoor events are taking over as the in thing everyone will be up for. You can have twice the fun outside than you do indoors. The cool ambiance will turn everybody's mood into a good one and the fact that it is closer to nature makes it a blast. You need not worry about food, as they are of course within your reach. Just lie back, enjoy the sceneries with friends and family while lying down on patio furniture and the warmth of patio heaters that will surely be relaxing.

Contrary to popular opinions, setting a patio is not that difficult at all. You can have a patio makeover with half the price. All you need is to put in essential pieces of furniture in the patio. You should also remove anything that is distracting to the eye. Setting up a focal point should be for the purpose that it can grab the attention of those who are in the patio. An outdoor market umbrella is essential as it will protect you and the guests from climate changes. As for the temperature at night that can be a bit chilly, an outdoor patio will solve your problem.

Nature's theme is a popular choice because everyone loves being in nature where there is lush greeneries, clean and unpolluted environment. Nature inspired theme will be more comfortable which is one of the reasons why people build patios in the first place. Outdoor market umbrella will provide shades from the piercing rays of the sun at the middle of the day. It can be decorated to appear like giant palm trees that offer shades for lost travelers.

Plants and flowers is an added advantage to creating an ambiance of nature. Flowers can match your preference. There are certain flowers that makes people amazed and interested, on the other hand there are also flowers that can annoy people and make them feel edgy. The plants and flowers would naturally need watering and sunlight. Place them in areas where they can be exposed to sunlight and a bit further from outdoor market umbrella. However, during rainy seasons, they can be placed under the umbrella to avoid them from drowning.

A focal point can be placed in the middle of the patio where everyone could see it when they enter the patio, or at an interesting spot that makes it shine most among the other elements in the patio. The focal point is like a main attraction that catchers everyone's attention and will be well remembered by everyone who came by as the item or structure they'll look forward to the next time they come and visit. A focal point can be a fountain, a painting, a large stone with symbolic meanings, a lush flower garden, or even a stone statue with your own portrait.

The patio covers are important. They are there to help protect your furniture from the damages caused by the weather. Outdoor market umbrella can guard your outdoor furniture from the unexpected weather change and with a portable and easy to install and uninstall, consider your problems solved. The patio heaters also serves you well when you need to lay down or sleep outside even if the air is cool.

It's not bad to impress your friends with your patio furniture and decorations, but it's better to amaze them by your willingness to accept them into your home, sharing all you resources just to make them feel at home and at ease.

Pros and Cons of Having a Bathroom Mirror

A bathroom mirror is a new permanent accessory for your precious bathroom. Modern homes today all have one to give their home a specific look that compliments the style of the rest of the household - as well as making sure that anyone who goes into your bathroom will enjoy the experience. With its growing popularity, we must delve deeper and determine if having a bathroom mirror is really a good thing or not. In this article, we will determine the pros and cons of having a mirror in your bathroom.

The Advantage Of Having A Bathroom Mirror

The bathroom's function has evolved. Gone were the days that we just go into the room to do our routines or freshen up. Now, bathroom rituals include putting on make-up, personal hygiene, storage, and more. These functions will not be possible with a bathroom mirror.

A bathroom mirror can be used to dry and style one's hair and to put on their make up rather than doing everything in your bedroom or living room - which will only add to the task of putting it away. You can just get the required tools from a storage cabinet that came with your mirror and get right on the task of pampering. Store it on the same place and you're ready to go.

As for men, a bathroom mirror is useful when shaving or testing out a new set of wardrobe to see how they look. This fixture can also become a medicine cabinet if you bought one with this purpose - a space saver for those who have limited home space - especially their bathroom.

But aside from these advantages, a bathroom mirror's main purpose is to give the room a specific design. They are commonly used as decorative items to fit perfectly with the taste of the owner. So instead of going through expensive home remodeling projects, you have that theme you always wanted with a simple design. Easy and cheap.

Some Disadvantages To Having A Bathroom Mirror

A bathroom mirror is definitely not for kids who are on the habit of breaking things at home. These may prove to be very dangerous to children who love to tinker in the bathroom. To avoid this problem, you can install your bathroom mirror with some modification to make sure that no accidental falling will occur while your kids are around. Additional support helps as well.

Hiring a Contractor For Bathroom Remodeling - Remodeling Contractors

Well here's the age old question, how do we go about finding a decent bathroom remodeling contractor.

Here's some things you will be looking for in a contractor.

1. Is Your Contractor Fair and Honest?

2. Does Your Contractor Have Experience Remodeling and Designing Bathrooms?

3. Can You Actually Find a Contractor Who Will Complete the Job in a Timely Manner?

4. Do You Think the Workers Will Be Able to Clean the Job up Daily?

5. Will the Contractor Show up on Time?

6. Is the Contractor Going to Work At Least Eight Hours a Day?

7. Does the Contractor's Crew Have Experience?

8. Is Your Contractor and His Crew Courteous?

If you find a contractor for your bathroom remodeling project that has answered yes to all questions above, hire that person immediately. Most contractors can sincerely answer yes to half of the questions above. If you're looking for the ultimate bathroom remodeling contractor, you could be searching for quite a while, you're looking for some one that is competent and you feel comfortable with.

When hiring a contractor, look for someone who has your interest in mind first and not theirs. Find someone who is willing to help with the designed process of your bathroom and the remodeling. If you find a contractor to be arrogant or controlling, there is a good chance, your bathroom might not turn out the way you envision it.

When hiring a contractor for your bathroom remodeling project or any home improvement project, the most important thing to keep in mind is, whether or not you feel comfortable with this person or not. Never hire a contractor you're not comfortable with.

If a contractor is referred to you by someone you trust, this does not guarantee you will be happy with the bathroom remodel. Most referrals that I have gotten over the years are like rolling the dice, I believe I would have done just as good picking a name out of a hat.

Common Types Of A Basement Bar Design

When given much attention, your basement can become one of the favorite rooms in your house. Basements make great recreational and entertainment spaces. If this is what you have been planning for your basement, this article is for you.

You might want to start with a basement bar design that is most appropriate for your basement. There are so many you could find. Below is a list of bar descriptions that are commonly used in households:

1. Staight-Bar Design. As its name implies, this basement bar design is the simplest of all. It looks similar to a front desk in hotel lobbies. The difference is its features and functionality. Like a typical bar, it has a little space for the sink on top, a foot rest on the stool side, a gutter area where you mix the drinks, an arm rail, and a space for the cooler or ref. The width for this type of bar can vary from 6 feet (or less) and up to 10 or maybe more. Make sure that when designing, you have investigated the measurements properly.

2. L-Shaped Bar. This is a basement bar design that is shaped like the letter L. There is no difference in the materials used and its features are the same as the standard straight bar. Simply put, the big notable difference is its design. Your friends can also enjoy a better conversation while sitting in this bar because the distance from other seats is closer. Again the measurements vary depending on the size of your basement but usually the lengths are symmetrical.

3. A Keggar Bar Design. This bar is very popularly used. Its design is shaped like two L-shaped bars joint with the straight type in the middle. Viewing from the top, it usually looks like a one-third of a square is cut and used. This basement bar design accommodates a perfect space for the refrigerator and a beer keg. Hence its name.

4. The Monster Bar. This is a very huge bar that can accommodate plenty of seats, a big space for the drinking area, equipped with a keg and beer gutter and all other basic bar features. Think of this basement bar design as a combination of the L-shaped and the Kegger but a lot bigger. A monster bar can also be designed in the shape of a letter U.

5. A Portable Bar Design. If you plan to bring your basement bar elsewhere in you home, this type could be what you want. Basement bars are usually huge and sturdy so weight can be a major concern. And considering that basements have low head room clearance, you may have some difficulty in moving a bar. The portable bar can be disassembled. This is what makes it unique. Probably the latest innovation in the basement bar design industry.

Of course, there are more designs for you to choose from. There are no limits to a basement bar design. You could even design a unique one yourself. You just have to know the common features in a bar, its functionality and usability, compartments, etc. What makes a basement bar enjoyable aside from the drinks is the good conversation with your friends. Align your designing in the light. Whether you are buying or building one, having this as a guide will surely give your home basement a pleasing and friendly atmosphere.

Complete your basement bar idea with the top basement bar design that suits your lifestyle. Learn more about basement remodeling online.

When We Choose Misery Over Happiness

I am not one to feel sorry for most people. They seem to have a unique ability to cause themselves the most damage during certain parts of their lives. I have met some pretty self destructive people in my life. Being raised by a mother that lived in misery and love.

My mother had a difficult childhood. It seemed as if every corner she turned there was a obstacle either right in front of here or waiting just around the corner. Her father died when she was 12 year old. He was a farm laborer and didn't make much money. In other words they were poor...... She got sent to live with a few foster families and according to her she was molested by one of the fathers she lived with.

Soon her older sister invited her to live with her. My aunt was married to the owner of a pottery business and had 2 children about 10 years younger than my mother. My aunt soon realized she had a live in baby sitter that allowed her to stay out drinking most of the day.

My Uncle was what you would call a drunk back then, now we call these people alcoholics. Well any way I think you are starting to get a picture of my mothers life up to this point. It is probably safe to assume that this isn't the ideal life for a young woman.

The next event to happen in my moms life was for my uncle to fall in the shower one night after tying one on that night. He died soon after but my aunt seemed to make a another good choice and ended up marring the owner of the bar that they spent most of their time in.
The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. Allan K. Chalmers

By this time my mom was in High School and met my future father. It wasn't exactly a marriage made in heaven. My dad was always an easy going man. He seemed to let most stuff go in one ear and out the other.

As you guessed it they had a few children. Nice one Dad and Mom. According to the books I have read on Angelic beings. People that believe in the after life and angels. They tell me I had a choice and was able to choose my parents....... What was I thinking...... I should have choose someone with some money and a couple of parents that were deeply in love .

How did I end up here in this situation.

I ended up loving my parents like most of us. They seemed to be doing the best that they could possibly do raising me, my bother and my sister. My mom and dad ended up getting a divorce and I went to live with my father.

My Father is remarried to a wonderful woman that seems to bring him a lot of happiness.
I haven't seen my mother for a while now. She lives with a life of excuses and misery. Her childhood was not the greatest but that doesn't give her the right to bring misery into other peoples lives. She has made a conscious choice to live what seems to be a painful life. Maybe her choices in life have made me choose happiness over misery.

I have always wondered what it is that motivates someone to live a life of true unhappiness when it takes the same amount of energy to live a life of joy. Life is meant to be full of joy and happiness so start today by making the right choices to live a fulfilling life of happiness.

How to Build a Basement Bathroom - What to Know Before You Start

One topic that gets a lot of attention is how to build a basement bathroom. Many people find themselves wondering if finishing their basement will add value to their homes and improve their living space. Overall, the answer is yes. A home with a finished basement, including a basement bathroom, adds a lot of livable square footage without an enormous cost. If you've got a basement and you'd like to make it some place that's worth living, you'll be happy to know that finishing it and adding a bathroom can be surprisingly simple and inexpensive. You just have to know what to do and you have to have a good plan.

What's the difference between a finished basement and a remodeled basement? Finished basements change a bare area into a carefully constructed living space, often with separate room and all the amenities you'd expect in the upper parts of a house. A basement remodeling is usually a much larger project that requires more effort and money. Many older finished basements, done with low quality materials or those that are just plain wrong, can turn into remodeling projects. You need to know in advance what you're doing and what methods you're going to use. Knowing how to build a basement bathroom properly in advance is one key to keeping yourself from having to remodel it again later.

This means keeping organic materials out of your basement bathroom and basement finishing projects. Many non organic materials are also susceptible - avoid ordinary wall board in favor of moisture resistant board, for instance. You'll be willing to deal with the extra expense when you realize that using a moisture resistant board in your new basement bathroom and in the rest of the basement will keep you from having to deal with mildew and mold. After all, you only want to build your basement bathroom once!

If you're not sure how to build a basement bathroom, or you know how to do some of the work but not all of it, stop. That doesn't mean you can't get into your dream finishing project. It does mean that you should enlist the help of a professional to get through the parts of your project that you don't know how to deal with. Making it up as you go is a surefire way to end up with a basement that needs work down the road!

You'll need to make sure that your basement bathroom has the right plumbing and wiring, good flooring that won't warp or delaminate, wall materials and paint that will resist damp and mildew, and fixtures that are suitable for use in a basement. Make sure that your bathroom is well lit and well ventilated, too. You'll be happier if you build a room that's pleasant to use as well as practical, and basement rooms can often seem cave like. Good design can help counteract this tendency. If you learn how to build a basement bathroom before you get started, you'll have a much better chance of a successful finishing project.

Solve Bathroom Storage Problems With Style

Because of the current boom in the property market, followed by the house prices, many homeowners have decided to increase the number of bathrooms a home has to add value to the house. Basic example of this is the private bathroom in the grand master bedrooms of many homes. Along this increase is the rising concern of limited bathroom storage and space.

Not like other rooms in the house, bathroom storage problems are not properly addressed because the focus of many is on the use of ceramics and brassware materials and the application of the contemporary, minimalist look and feel. Although the minimalist look of the bathrooms today may make them appear huge and spacey, the capacity of bathrooms to store many necessities are very easily overlooked. Here are some solutions that may just be the answer to the prayers of many who worry about adequate bathroom space.

Bathroom furniture such as cabinets makes good bathroom storage utility. They need not be elaborately-designed. A simple design would do to maintain the 'minimalist' view that many have in their heads when it comes to the way bathrooms should look.

There are four varied types of bathroom storage solution that you can choose from: units, complete sets, cabinets and accessories. Each of which can be customized, designed and styled the way you like them to be.

Units are the simplest way in creating cupboards beneath basins. Units can also be hung against walls at a height you decide most members of the household can easily reach (including you). They can also be floor-standing with only a leg and a plinth set. There are many sizes of units available in the market. They may also be either made of traditional wood, gloss white and others.

Complete furniture sets for the bathroom---which include a basin---are also similar to units. Because they come in sets (one design, one style), it is easy to make the design of your bathroom match or relate to each other well, making the bathroom appear more unified.

Cabinets also make good storages hence the mirrored wall cabinet that is usually hanged above the basin. This kind of cabinet has two purposes: storage for the shave and the mirror, to look into when shaving.

Finally, there are accessories that can also act as storages. Unlike units, cabinets and the complete furniture sets, instead of hiding the objects they're supposed to have or carry, accessories only expose these things for the convenience and easy reach of the users.

Although the four solutions to the problem of bathroom storage may seem plain, there are actually a lot of designs in the market to choose from!

Cost Effective Stair Building

What is the most cost effective way of building stairs? Why do the tract homes use on site methods of construction? When you think of a factory assembling a product on a assembly line you think why not a home. Why do they still build homes on lots or residential home sites?

If homes could be built in a factory cheaper than on site that is exactly what every home builder would be doing. They just haven't quite figured it out yet. When dealing with the large amounts of materials required to build a house and of course the expense of shipping. It is not cost effective to build a conventional home in a factory and ship it over long distances.

This is the biggest problem with cost effective stair construction. Most prefabricated stairs you will notice are spiral stairs. These stairs are smaller than most stairs that are used for multi level construction.

Spiral stairs are hard for your average carpenter to build. These stairs can be purchased from a factory easily and quite inexpensive.

The stairs in your average two story house are going to weigh about 3 times the amount of a spiral set of stairs that could be shipped in a cost effective way. Spiral stairs are not going to be the main stairway in a home and normally go up to a loft or an attic. Most spiral stairs don't meet the minimum building requirements for the main stairway in your home.

When building tract homes the lumber is shipped in bulk directly to the house site where it will be assembled. The lumber and other building materials will be shipped once. If it went to a factory and then assembled it would also have to be sent to the site on which the house was to be built. This added expense in shipping the materials twice is the problem for such a large and heavy item such as a set of stairs.

There are other prefabricated types of stairs that are built locally and the shipping usually is not a major expense. If you are building a stairway that is not to difficult to build for the average carpenter it will normally be cost effective to build the stairs on site. This would require having the carpenter build the stairs as part of the rough framing and then after drywall have the finish carpenter build the stair handrail system.

Wooden Bench Making in 6 Easy Steps

Although you may think it is really more difficult than it really is, bench making can be done in 6 simple steps. After we have gathered the needed materials and tools we can do bench making in no time. We can make ourselves a nice, simple and safe wooden bench; one that will be both functional and beautiful and something you will be sure to get compliments on and a great conversation piece. After all, what's better than saying, Yeah, I made that!"

Bench making is easier with these six steps.

1. First, we start off by measuring the frame of the bench seat to our desired dimensions, cut them, and then tack-nail them together. Bench making includes drawing a curve line on the side pieces lengthways and cutting them using a jigsaw before attaching them together. This forms the seat shape. We may also form it as we see fit.

Then cut and sand the seat slats and mark their face boards. Screw the seat frame tightly together. Glue and nail the slats to the frame, beginning from the back. A inch vertical spacer will help. A good bench making design is providing a slight slat overhang on the front.

2. Second, we come to the screwing portion of bench making. Glue and screw front legs to our seat frame by first pre-drilling and applying countersink holes for screws to fit in. Do the same with the hind legs.

3. Third is sanding. Bench making is also about safety so we round sharp corners and sand the seat face and legs to smoothen all surfaces. This avoids board grains or fibers from sticking out and hurting the user. Sanding also creates better-looking seat surfaces.

4. Fourth, we deal with the back rest in bench making. Get the top rail measurement and add a space 5/8 inch from the rail top to the back part of the hind leg. This should give a 1/8 inch space at the bottom of the rail between the back part of the leg and the rail.

Then place the router tenons or tongues and vertical back slats on one end. There should be a fitting groove at the top rail. The tongues should easily fit into the groove. Glue the slats and nail them.

5. Fifth, bench making with armrests requires putting wood cleats 3 1/2 by 3/4 by 3'4 inches to support the front legs. Make a 3/16 inch hole with a drill at the midpoint of the cleat and have it attached through the bracing at the corner.

The armrest should measure from the back of the hind leg to some inches off the front leg. An armrest notch should receive the leg support of the back rest. Drill a hole and countersink atop the front cleat piercing the armrest then glue and screw.

6. Then, sixth is final sanding. Bench making should end with all surfaces, ends, and corners smoothen before painting. There we have our nice, simple, and sturdy bench.

John Grant is a the author for a how to do it your self site where he is writing articles about how to build a bench.

Finding Homes Using the Internet - Home Shopping

You can simply type the words real estate or homebuying into any search engine on the World Wide Web and you will come up with hundreds, maybe even thousands of websites that are extremely helpful and full of great information. Like the one you're on right now.

Finding homes with the internet, combined with a skilled real estate salesperson, provides you with the most effective technology available today. Most websites start out, having you select a state you would like to search in and then, select a city, with your price range.

By answering their questions, this narrows the search down to all of the homes available in the area. The internet has made home shopping very simple. Considering what you had to go through in the 1970s. You found a realtor or by looking in the yellow pages, sometimes you found a good realtor and if you are lucky, maybe you would find you a good home.

Most of the time, the first homes you would look at, were owned by the real estate professional you were working with.

There are however a couple of problems with using the internet to find your dream home. Some of the verbage used and photographs taken can create a wonderful illusion of a tropical paradise but the reality, it's a regular home in a decent neighborhood.

Some of these photos are taken by skilled photographers who take advantage of every angle and tend to give an illusion of grander. When you actually start driving around and looking at these homes, only then will you get a reality check, of what the home actually looks like. You'll get used to it.

After you've looked at a few of your future dream homes, you will get a better idea of what I'm talking about with these wonderful pictures and the extraordinary home descriptions like "Beautiful Three Bedroom House with an Ocean View." When reality it's a two-bedroom house with an extra closet for the third bedroom and the ocean is 45 miles away, but you can see it on a clear day if you actually climb to the top of the largest tree on the property.

Take your time when searching for your dream home and don't let any one push you into making a decision if you're not ready. If you find your real estate professional a little too aggressive or pushy, get out of your contract, if you've signed one and find another, more helpful real estate salesperson to help you with your home purchase.

Ceiling Plumbing Leak Repair

Kitchen Center Islands

The kitchen is one of the most difficult rooms in the house to design. It is no longer enough for the kitchen to be practical, it also needs to look amazing! Beautiful tiled floors, stone countertops, and kitchen center islands are just a few of the many details that remodelers love to add to their homes.

When you design a kitchen, you have two directions in which you can go. You can opt for a fitted kitchen or an unfitted, also known as a freestanding, kitchen. A fitted kitchen is the design in which all the kitchen features, such as the cabinets, stove, and countertops are installed into the room itself. This configuration means that these items stay in place and you cannot take them with you when you move. This design is the most common and most homeowners go this route because it helps increase the resale value of the house. If, however, you would like to take your kitchen furniture with you when you leave, you should design a freestanding kitchen. These rooms do not utilize the kitchen space as efficiently as a fitted kitchen does but you have more control over the resulting look and feel of the room.

No matter which layout you decide works best for your home, you need to look into kitchen center islands. Most kitchens use up all their wall space with refrigerators, large ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, and sinks. With all these necessary appliances, you end up with little to no counter space! A kitchen without counter space is almost useless! You end up making less nutritious meals because you do not have any room to chop up vegetables and fruits.

This situation is why you need a kitchen island. These pieces of kitchen furniture are incredibly helpful for the families who suffer from not enough storage space and no counter space. An island table usually sits in the center of the room and makes your life easier because you can reach the refrigerator, stove, and sink without difficulty from this location.

Kitchen center islands look great in both fitted and freestanding kitchens and you will love how useful these items are! Start shopping for yours today!

Advantages of Framing With Steel Studs

I have heard all sorts of stories over the years of the advantages in framing with steel versus wood studs. One time I even heard you could build an entire house with the amount of recycled steel from a large automobile such as a Cadillac. I find this hard to believe unless you're building a very small home.

My personal favorite for framing with steel studs is that they are extremely straight. I have built nonbearing partition walls using 12 foot 3 1/2 inch wide steel studs and after the drywall you can lay an 8 foot level to check it for straightness on the wall with amazing results.

If you use 3 1/2 inch wide steel studs with 5/8 of an inch drywall you will get an extremely durable and sturdy wall. Framing was steel studs is common in office renovations or remodeling. Most of the steel stud framing is done via the drywall contractors.

Steel studs and termites do not mix. You'll never have to worry about these little buggers or other uninvited house pests damaging your walls.

Over the years I have heard stories that steel framed buildings are earthquake and fire proof. They might be more resistant to fire than wood but keep in mind when metal is hot enough it will bend and warp making it unusable.

When I hear people talking about a fireproof building built with metal framing components my first thought is all of the other materials used in building the house that are not fire resistant. Don't get a false illusion when buying a house framed with steel studs and think it is 100% fire proof.

As far as steel framed buildings being earthquake proof this is another story. I really can't comment too much on earthquake damage to a steel building. The problem with earthquakes is they seem to create fires. So even if you're building does survive an earthquake it could get damaged by a fire in the area.

I have framed more wood homes than steel homes over the years and my steel stud construction is limited to nonbearing partition walls usually located in office buildings. I love framing with metal because of its light weight and ease of construction.

I still love framing with wood. There is something about what framing that I have always loved and always will.

Disney World Vacation Deals

When looking for Disney Vacation deals you need to be aware of some information that could save you time and money when visiting Disney World.

1.Make sure you will be available during the times indicated on the vacation package. They usually limit you to a specific number of days or weekdays. Always check your dates of arrival and the time you are allowed to check in! You do not want to book a flight and land in Orlando at 10h00 but only be able to access your hotel room at 16h00. This would completely break down your spirit.

2.You must find a website that will help you do all your online bookings quickly, safely and easily. All you have to do is type in the area you would be visiting i.e. Disney World, and then choose your dates of arrival and departure. What should be revealed is a huge selection of hotels, motels, resorts and guest accommodation. You can narrow your search down from a 1 to a 5 star venue. In other words, the selection must be able to suit your needs and pocket. The website should also tell you instant availability of the accommodation.

3.Each venue needs to be very well described; pictures will make your choice a lot easier. The website must show you a map of where exactly each venue is. It will also tell you what type of accommodation they have and how many people they can accommodate. They should have guest reviews of the accommodation basically measuring staff, services, cleanliness, comfort and value for money. They need to be very open reviews, so good or bad; you get to see them all. There will also be recommendations of visiting the resort again. This just makes it easier when you are indecisive as to which hotel to book at if you have 3 options that meet your budget requirements.

4.Each hotel has pictures of the inside of the rooms as well as outside. Yes I know what you are saying, "pictures can be deceiving". I agree with you, but this booking company takes pride in what they offer. They are worried about their brand out there. Trust me; a lot of effort has been done to make this site a truly spectacular service so fake pictures will not be on the agenda. Check out people's reviews of the venue as these will reflect pictures. Someone might say "Pictures are not exactly as website," then you know this venue is not entirely honest.

5.Find out the following before booking: Does the booking service charge a booking fee when booking with them? What type of payment is accepted? Do they accept all types of credit cards? They generally accept all types of credit cards, but they do ask you before booking to read what credit cards will be accepted for payment at each specific hotel. What happens if you cancel your booking? Will they refund you or not? Read those terms and conditions. Can you book telephonically? Is the booking page encrypted? Do they do encrypt personal and credit card information? It is advisable to ask your booking agent. If you do not get the answers you are looking for, or if they cannot give you clear answers, find another booking agent.

After you are happy with all the answers and you have booked I suggest you enjoy the vacation you deserve it.

Problems With New Houses - Home Building

The house you live in was probably a mass produced home built as part of a housing track. The track home is a rapidly built house in phases. These phases if possible will over lap the other home building trades. If possible you will have the plumbers working on the same house as the electricians and the framers. This is called fast tracking.

Fast tracking a house is building a home as fast as humanly possible. So you can imagine the pressures put on all of the people involved in building a track home.
The pace is so fast sometimes that I have seen job superintendents and foremen look like they were actually going to blow up. I mean explode from the pressure they where under.

Framing the stairs on the job was the same experience for me most of the time. Sometimes I had three jobs going at once. Think about it. At the most, I could only go to each of the jobs twice each week. That involved working on Saturday of course. This made a lot of framing foremen extremely upset. They had full time crews on their jobs always working five days a week. If I missed one day of work. I was behind for the rest of the job.

Now it rarely happened but if I did miss a day of work I had to make it up some how. The only way to make it up was by working late or on Sunday. Well most of the time I worked six days a week from 7:00 in the mourning until 5:00 at night. So working late meant sunrise to sunset. Oh did I mention that I did have a family. This wasn't easy for them either.

One time I got so far behind on a job that I was putting stairs in while they were roofing the houses. Talk about one unhappy foreman. I think you get the idea about the pressure I was under to install these stairs on time. My experience building stairs on track built homes taught me to build homes extremely fast while being proficient.
I'm not interested in working like that anymore. My life is simple now and I want to keep it that way. The next time you see a construction worker working late on a Saturday show some compassion. Maybe by reading this article you will understand some of the pressure he is under.

Building tract homes is hard on you mentally and physically.

Happy Home building.

Home Improvement Tip - Fixing a Squeaky Floor

Question: I have a floor that every single time I step on it I get the most annoying sound. I don't know what it does to me or why it bothers me so much. My kitchen floor squeaks and actually moves up and down if you are standing on it. The whole floor moves. How do I stop it from moving and squeaking. Help Me Greg!

Answer: It sounds like you have a broken floor joist. You are going to have to go under your house. If you have a basement this will be a little easier to fix. It is my guess that you don't have a basement or you would have seen the broken floor joist by now.

Have someone stand on the floor in the spot that squeaks and have them move up and down while you are under the house. Don't have them jump up and down while you are under the house. This could cause more damage to the structural framing of the floor. Once you are in the right position under the floor you can have them start moving slowly. What you are looking for is one of the floor joist that are moving.

If you see one of them moving. Look to see where the damage is. Is it a split, crack, wood rot or a big knot in the wood that has loosened up and fell out. Once you find the damaged floor joist you can now think about repairing it.

If you don't see any floor joist moving. Have the person on top start moving a little bit more and you can even have them jump on it a few times until you see something out of place. If you still don't see any broken floor joist. Start looking at the sub-floor, this will be plywood of some form, 1 x 6 or 2 x 6 materials.

What you are looking for is movement of any kind. Is there a separation or movement between the sub-floor and the floor joist. If you still can't find the problem maybe it is time to call in a professional.

The main thing you are going to be looking for is movement of any kind.

Most squeaky floors are caused from the sub-floor rubbing up and down on a nail. If you have carpeting and you have a squeaky floor you can do your best to locate a floor joist and screw right through your carpeting into the floor joist.

Extend Your Home Without Building an Extension!

If your home is starting to feel a little bit too small but you cannot afford to move at present, it can feel as though you are stuck for space. But there are solutions that can greatly enhance your home without having to go to all the expense of building an extension.

The other problem with an extension of course is that you may not have enough room to make one practical. If you are in this situation now you might want to think about having a veranda built instead, because if it is done properly and designed with care and attention it can really transform your whole house.

The first step is to take a good look at the outside of your home and think about the amount of space you could give over to a veranda. It doesn't need to be a perfect square or rectangle either - if you have space along one side of your house as well as at the rear, you could create an L shaped veranda that 'hugs the house'. This can look stunning when it is finished and the ground is done to your chosen design as well.

The secret of a good veranda is that it almost becomes another room. The roof transforms what was previously just a part of the garden into a sheltered area where you can put a table and chairs for entertaining. You could even use it as an outside office when the weather is nice enough! Just imagine sitting outside with your laptop and enjoying a cool iced tea while you finish typing that report.

It's important to think about how you would use your verandah before you decide on the final design or size you are going to opt for. For example, if you plan to use it for entertaining you will need to make sure it is big enough to accommodate the table and chairs you have in mind. You might also want to use a sun lounger to relax in the shade, but if the veranda is too small then you won't be able to use it like you had intended.

Just as with any other room in your house, you can add some decoration to your verandah as well. You could paint the walls of that part of your house a slightly different colour perhaps, or simply add some colour by putting a number of hanging baskets, pots and troughs filled with flowers around the structure itself.

All these things help to mark out the area as being separate from the rest of your house, and even as a separate area when compared to the rest of your garden too.

All in all a veranda is excellent value for money and one of the easiest ways to completely alter the mood and feel of your property. No matter what style house you have, you will be able to find a verandah that will fit right in and look as if it was always meant to be there.

Structural Framing Beams

Let's start with the beams. They can be Glulam, Parallam, Microlam or even wood beams. What are all of these and why do I need them in my house. The beams are used to hold up parts of the house and are located in your walls, roofs and floors. Beams are used to transfer a load from one point to another.

Structural framing beams allow the architect to create large openings, floors and roofs in your house. The beams are also used to support the weight over the doors, windows and other openings in your home. These beams support massive amounts of weight in some cases and are even made of steel if needed.

Another growing problem is the lack of old growth trees in the forest. If we just used wood beams with out using the new engineered beams we would have to cut down a lot more of the bigger trees. So you can add these guys to your Christmas list. The lumber or wood engineers have come up with all sorts of alternatives for new building products. These new beams are just some of them. Keep up the good work guys...

Glulam is a engineered wood product comprised of wood laminations, or 2 x 4s that are bonded together with strong, waterproof adhesives. If you use a Glulam beam on the buildings exterior you will have to order a exterior Glulam beam. In this case the manufacture will use special exterior rated glues for the beam.

When ordering any wood engineered beams specify to the lumber yard what you are using the beam for. Exterior or Interior of the building. If you use a interior glulam over time there is a good chance of the beam delaminating or cracking apart.

Parallam is made from almost all of the wood on the log using veneer strands that are aligned parallel for maximum strength. The end product is a rectangular beam; which is longer, thicker, and stronger than solid-sawn lumber. They are often used as beams, headers, columns, and posts, among others uses.

Microllam is an engineered wood product that uses multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives. It offers several advantages over typical milled lumber: it is stronger, straighter, and more uniform. It is much less likely than conventional lumber to warp, twist, bow, or shrink due to its composite nature. Made in a factory under controlled specifications, Microllam products allow users to reduce the onsite labor. They are typically used for headers, beams, rim board, and edge-forming material.

These beams come in all sorts of different lengths, widths and heights. They are engineered to hold amazing amounts of weight. They really are great engineering marvels.

Tip: I have had to replace almost all of these types of beams over the years due to some form of damage. Like anything else in your home if it is used improperly there is a good chance your are going to have some sort of failure. I have seen people add weight to these structural beams with no thought of them ever failing.

If you are planning on building a room addition, rebuilding your roof, adding a floor or any other type of construction where you are adding a addition load to your house. You might want to consult with a building contractor or structural engineer.
